HEALTH PROCEDURES

Examinations

Eye and ear examinations are given each year.  Physical examination by your child’s physician is required for school entry, ie. kindergarten or grade 1. Thereafter it is recommended that students have a complete physical by their physician at least once during each developmental stage.  These stages include early childhood, pre-adolescence, and adolescence.  Children in Grade 4 and Grade 6 will also be examined by the school nurse for scoliosis (curvature of the spine).  If you prefer that the scoliosis exam be done by your child’s own physician, simply notify the school nurse in writing.

Communicable Diseases

Please report any communicable disease to the school nurse:  chicken pox; German measles; mumps; measles; whooping cough; hepatitis; scarlet fever; strep throat; rubella; impetigo; scabies; conjunctivitis (pink eye); pediculosis (head lice).

Tuberculin Testing

All pupils entering Kindergarten shall be required to have, as part of a pre-school physical examination, a tuberculin skin test with results documented on their health record.  All other newly-enrolled or transfer pupils with no valid record of a previous tuberculin skin test shall be required to have an intradermal tuberculin test with results documented on their health record.  This test may be obtained at a private physician's office or Child Health Clinic.

Insurance

School insurance for emergency and accidental coverage is available and forms will be sent home with your child for your review.  Parents are urged to consider participation in our school insurance program.  Any child participating in contact sport extra-curricular activities must be covered either by school insurance or a private carrier.

MEDICATION/PRESCRIPTIONS

1)         The parent or guardian must provide a written request for the administration of the prescribed medication at school.  This includes any and all over-the-counter medications as per NJ Administrative Code.

2)         Written orders are to be provided to the school nurse from the private physician, detailing the diagnosis or type of illness involved, the name of the drug, dosage, time of administration, and the duration.

3)         The medication must  be brought to the school by a responsible adult in the original container, appropriately labeled by the pharmacy or physician.  Medication must not be sent into school with students.

4)         The school physician should review and advise the school pertaining to the orders of the private physician.

5)         The school should provide a secured, locked space for the safe storage of medication.

6)         In the absence of the school nurse and where no substitute is available, the school will attempt to contact the parent/guardian of students who must take medication that day.  They will be informed that the medication will not be administered in school by any school official.  They shall be given the option of coming in to school and administering the medication to his/her child.

7)                  A copy of Regulation 5141.21 shall be provided to all parents or guardians who request administration of medication at school.

STUDENT DRESS CODE

The Hampton Township Board of Education recognizes the right of students and parents/guardians to exercise personal judgement in matters of proper student dress. We strongly support parents in their efforts to insure the neat appearance of each student since their appearance generally denotes good self-discipline as well as a good attitude and demeanor. Besides being neat and clean, clothing should not be hazardous to the health and safety of self and others, nor detract from or interfere with the educational environment.

The following guidelines are to be considered as basic or minimum:

a)      Footwear must be worn at all times.  Flip-flops should not be worn!

b)      Patches, slogans, words, symbols or pictures of an offensive or obscene nature may not be worn.

c)      No tank tops, halter tops, muscle shirts, midriff tops, or mesh-net tops, or spaghetti-strap tops are to be worn.

d)      No blouses or shirts that are cut off in any way are to be worn.

e)      Hats, exclusive of yarmulkes, and sunglasses are to be removed upon entering the school building.

f)        Shorts that are appropriate in style and wear will be permitted on the first school day in May through the last school day in September. All shorts must be mid-thigh length, free of holes. "Short-shorts" and "cut-offs" are not acceptable school attire. The administration reserves the right to modify this code as weather conditions dictate.

g)      No metal studs, spikes, chains, or other potentially hazardous items that may cause excessive wear and tear to school equipment and furniture should be worn.

h)      Pupils attending school functions (such as field trips, dances, or other activities) will be permitted to modify this code with permission obtained in advance via the classroom teacher and/or administration, or if a specific circumstance requires the attire (i.e.: hat day).

i)        All pupils whose dress is in violation of this policy will be required to dress suitably before being permitted to return to class. When necessary, parents/guardians will be contacted to bring to school appropriate clothing so that the pupil may return to class.

Recurring violations or  refusal to comply with this policy will result in disciplinary action. The final decision in determining the suitability of dress will rest with the administration of the school, subject to the usual appeals.

EXCLUSION OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN SCHOOL

No beepers, cellular phones, walkmans, portable radios, compact discs, tape players, televisions, or other personal visual or listening devices are to be brought to school for personal use.
